AN EYEWITNESS TO JESUS--PART I
SERMON TITLE: SIGN ONE--WATER INTO WINE
SERMON THEME: SOMETHING BETTER
SERMON TEXT: JOHN 2:1-12; JOHN 20:30-31
INTRODUCTION: FAITH AND BELIEF ARE OFTEN SEPARATED FROM REASON
AND REPLACED WITH HOPE.
· JOHN NOT ONLY TELLS US WHAT HAPPENED, HE ALSO TELLS WHY IT HAPPENED.
30 Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. 31 But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
· JOHN LAYS OUT SEVEN SIGNS THAT SERVE AS EVIDENCE AS TO WHY YOU SHOULD BELIEVE.
· IN THE END IT WAS NOT FAITH THAT CONVINCED THE DISCIPLES AS TO WHO JESUS WAS. IT WAS WHAT THEY SAW AND WHAT THEY HEARD.
38 But if I do them, even though you do not believe me, believe the works, that you may know and understand that the Father is in me, and I in the Father.”
THE PURPOSE OF THE SIGNS ARE TO POINT PEOPLE TO
THE IDENTITY OF JESUS.
48 “Unless you people see signs and wonders,” Jesus told him, “you will never believe.”
I) A WEDDING EMBARRASSMENT
2 On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, 2 and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3 When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.” 4 “Woman,[a] why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.” 5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” 6 Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons
· THE MINISTRY EVENTS OF JESUS HAD TO BE ACCORDING TO THE PLAN AND TIMING OF GOD.
MARK 7:3; 8
3 (The Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they give their hands a ceremonial washing, holding to the tradition of the elders.
8 You have let go of the commands of God and are holding on to human traditions.”
· JESUS DECIDES TO GO PUBLIC BY USING SOMETHING THAT WOULD SOON BE REPLACED BY HIS PRESENCE.
II) A MIRACULOUS WINE SOLUTION
7 Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim. 8 Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.”
They did so, 9 and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside 10 and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.”
· YOU HAVE SAVED THE BEST TILL NOW AND GOD DID AS WELL. BECAUSE THE SACRAFICIAL SYSTEM SET THE STAGE FOR THE COMING OF JESUS.
29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! 30 This is the one I meant when I said, ‘A man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’ 31 I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that he might be revealed to Israel.”
· JESUS WAS MORE THAN A MIRACLE, THIS EVENT WAS A SIGN.
III) A REVELATION OF GOD'S GLORY
11 What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him. 12 After this he went down to Capernaum with his mother and brothers and his disciples. There they stayed for a few days.
· YOU ARE NOT ASKED TO JUST BELIEVE, AND YOU ARE NOT REQUIRED TO TAKE IT BY FAITH. YOU ARE INVITED TO BELIEVE WHAT HAPPENED BASED ON THE TESTIMONY OF THE PEOPLE WHO WERE THERE.
14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
CONCLUSION: TO KNOW JESUS IS MORE THAN HAVING FAITH, IT IS ALSO TO HEAR JOHN WHO WAS AN EYEWITNESS TO WHAT JESUS SAID AND DID.
31 But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
