PRAYER THAT WORKS--PART II
SERMON TITLE: THE POWER OF PRESISTENT PRAYER
SERMON THEME: NEVER GIVE UP!
INTRODUCTION: BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU PRAY FOR BECAUSE YOU MAY
GET IT, AND THEN YOU MAY WISH YOU HAD NEVER PRAYED FOR IT.
· WILL GOD GRANT A REQUEST WHEN IT IS NOT IN YOUR BEST INTEREST?
II KINGS 20:1-6
In those days Hezekiah became ill and was at the point of death. The prophet Isaiah son of Amoz went to him and said, “This is what the Lord says: Put your house in order, because you are going to die; you will not recover.”
2 Hezekiah turned his face to the wall and prayed to the Lord, 3 “Remember, Lord, how I have walked before you faithfully and with wholehearted devotion and have done what is good in your eyes.” And Hezekiah wept bitterly.
4 Before Isaiah had left the middle court, the word of the Lord came to him: 5 “Go back and tell Hezekiah, the ruler of my people, ‘This is what the Lord, the God of your father David, says: I have heard your prayer and seen your tears; I will heal you. On the third day from now you will go up to the temple of the Lord. 6 I will add fifteen years to your life. And I will deliver you and this city from the hand of the king of Assyria. I will defend this city for my sake and for the sake of my servant David.’”
· MANY PEOPLE DO NOT BELIEVE IN THE POWER OF PRAYER AND, THEY BELIEVE THAT IT DOES NOT MATTER WHETHER YOU PRAY OR NOT.
12 Then he continued, “Do not be afraid, Daniel. Since the first day that you set your mind to gain understanding and to humble yourself before your God, your words were heard, and I have come in response to them. 13 But the prince of the Persian kingdom resisted me twenty-one days. Then Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me, because I was detained there with the king of Persia. 14 Now I have come to explain to you what will happen to your people in the future, for the vision concerns a time yet to come.”
· PERSISTENT PRAYER IS IMPORTANT IF YOU ARE GOING TO TRUST IN GOD.
TO PRAY WITH PERSISTENCE IS TO ALWAYS PRAY
I) PRAY CONSTANTLY!
Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up. 2 He said: “In a certain town there was a judge who neither feared God nor cared what people thought. 3 And there was a widow in that town who kept coming to him with the plea, ‘Grant me justice against my adversary.’
· YOU ARE TO ALWAYS PRAY AND NOT GIVE UP.
I THESSALONIANS 5:17
17 pray continually,
· PRAYER TURNS LOOSE THE POWER OF HEAVEN.
II) PRAY CONFIDENTLY!
4 “For some time he refused. But, finally he said to himself, ‘Even though I don’t fear God or care what people think, 5 yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will see that she gets justice, so that she won’t eventually come and attack me!’”
· GOD TEACHES US THAT WE ARE TO PRAY WITH CONFIDENCE, BECAUSE JESUS GIVES US GOOD AND PERFECT GIFTS.
Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.
· CONFIDENCE COMES FROM CHRIST ALONE, THROUGH SCRIPTURE ALONE, BY GRACE ALONE.
III) PRAY CONSISTENTLY!
6 And the Lord said, “Listen to what the unjust judge says. 7 And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off? 8 I tell you, he will see that they get justice, and quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?”
· WE ARE TO CRY OUT DAY AND NIGHT.
· PRAYER IS AN AGGRESSIVE, ACTIVE MINISTRY, WHERE YOU PUT YOUR SHOULDER TO THE WHEEL MOVING THE FORCES OF HEAVEN.
Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.
· PERSEVERANCE IS A MAJOR PART IN THE LIFE OF A FOLLOWER OF JESUS.
In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. 27 And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.
CONCLUSION: PRAY YOUR PRAYERS AGAIN, AND AGAIN, AND AGAIN!
PRAY CONSTANTLY, PRAY WITH CONFIDENCE, AND PRAY CONSISTENTLY.
The Lord is far from the wicked, but he hears the prayer of the righteous.
