PRAYER THAT WORKS--PART III

SERMON TITLE: THE POWER OF PERSUASIVE PRAYER

SERMON THEME: PRAYER CAN CHANGE GOD

INTRODUCTION: CAN YOUR PRAYERS PERSUADE GOD TO CHANGE HIS

MIND?

EXODUS 32:14

Then the Lord relented and did not bring on his people the disaster he had threatened.

·         IT SEEMS GOD BACKED UP AND CHANGED HIS MIND OE DID HE?

NUMBERS 23:19

God is not human, that he should lie, not a human being, that he should change his mind.
Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill?

THE SETTING FOR MOSES PRAYER

EXODUS 24:18

Then Moses entered the cloud as he went on up the mountain. And he stayed on the mountain forty days and forty nights.

·         GOD CALLS MOSES TO COME TO THE MOUNTAIN FOR 40 DAYS, AND SHOWS US THAT PRAYER IS A POWERFUL FORCE.

EXODUS 32:1-8

When the people saw that Moses was so long in coming down from the mountain, they gathered around Aaron and said, “Come, make us gods[a] who will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who brought us up out of Egypt, we don’t know what has happened to him.”

Aaron answered them, “Take off the gold earrings that your wives, your sons and your daughters are wearing, and bring them to me.” So all the people took off their earrings and brought them to Aaron. He took what they handed him and made it into an idol cast in the shape of a calf, fashioning it with a tool. Then they said, “These are your gods,[b] Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.”

When Aaron saw this, he built an altar in front of the calf and announced, “Tomorrow there will be a festival to the Lord.” So the next day the people rose early and sacrificed burnt offerings and presented fellowship offerings. Afterward they sat down to eat and drink and got up to indulge in revelry.

Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go down, because your people, whom you brought up out of Egypt, have become corrupt. They have been quick to turn away from what I commanded them and have made themselves an idol cast in the shape of a calf. They have bowed down to it and sacrificed to it and have said, ‘These are your gods, Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.’

·         THE PEOPLE'S FAITH IN GOD WAS DISRUPTED BY THEIR IMPATIENCE.

WHY DID IT MATTER THAT MOSES TRIED TO PERSUADE GOD TO CHANGE HIS MIND?

1) BECAUSE MOSES BELIEVED GOD'S JUDGEMENT WAS REAL.

EXODUS 32:9-10

“I have seen these people,” the Lord said to Moses, “and they are a stiff-necked people. 10 Now leave me alone so that my anger may burn against them and that I may destroy them. Then I will make you into a great nation.”

·         MOSES KNEW GOD WAS NOT PLAYING SO HE HAD TO PRAY PERSUASIVELY TO GOD.

II CHRONICLES 30:8

Do not be stiff-necked, as your ancestors were; submit to the Lord. Come to his sanctuary, which he has consecrated forever. Serve the Lord your God, so that his fierce anger will turn away from you.

·         GOD CALLS YOU TO YIELD TO HIS WILL.

II) BECAUSE MOSES BELIEVED GOD'S GLORY WAS PRIMARY.

EXODUS 32:11-12

11 But Moses sought the favor of the Lord his God. “Lord,” he said, “why should your anger burn against your people, whom you brought out of Egypt with great power and a mighty hand? 12 Why should the Egyptians say, ‘It was with evil intent that he brought them out, to kill them in the mountains and to wipe them off the face of the earth’? Turn from your fierce anger; relent and do not bring disaster on your people.

·         PERSUASIVE PRAYER MAKES GOD'S GLORY THE PRIMARY GOAL.

MATTHEW 18:19

“Again, truly I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything they ask for, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven.

·         GOD HAS GIVEN YOU AUTHORITY TO PLEAD WITH GOD TO ALTER HIS WILL IN PRAYER.

III) BECAUSE MOSES BELIEVED GOD'S PROMISES WERE ETERNAL.

EXODUS 32:13-14

13 Remember your servants Abraham, Isaac and Israel, to whom you swore by your own self: ‘I will make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and I will give your descendants all this land I promised them, and it will be their inheritance forever.’” 14 Then the Lord relented and did not bring on his people the disaster he had threatened.

·         GOD DOES NOT HAVE TO BE REMINDED OF HIS PROMISES, BUT YOU DO.

ROMANS 8:28

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who[a] have been called according to his purpose.

·         GOD IS ALWAYS FAITHFUL TO HIS WORD, AND HE WAITS FOR YOU TO GET ON THE SAME PAGE.

CONCLUSION: BECAUSE MOSES BELIEVED GOD'S PEOPLE WERE HIS RESPONSIBILITY.

EXODUS 32:30-33

30 The next day Moses said to the people, “You have committed a great sin. But now I will go up to the Lord; perhaps I can make atonement for your sin.”

31 So Moses went back to the Lord and said, “Oh, what a great sin these people have committed! They have made themselves gods of gold. 32 But now, please forgive their sin—but if not, then blot me out of the book you have written.”

33 The Lord replied to Moses, “Whoever has sinned against me I will blot out of my book.

·         MOSES WAS WILLING TO BEAR THE PUNISHMENT FOR HIS PEOPLE'S SINS.

·         WHEN YOU PRAY COME BEFORE GOD KNOWING YOU HAVE THE AUTHORITY TO CALL ON HIM.

HEBREWS 10:19-22

19 Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, 20 by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body, 21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water.
