WHAT IS THE CHURCH AND WHO IS THE CHURCH?--PART VI
SERMON TITLE: THE CHURCH HAS BIG ANSWERS TO BIG PROBLEMS IN LIFE
SERMON THEME: A MESSAGE OF ETERNAL LIFE AND A BETTER LIFE
SERMON TEXT: GALATIANS 5:16-18

DOES THE MESSAGE OF THE CHURCH REALLY MATTER TODAY?

ISAIAH 30:21
21 Your ears will hear a word behind you, “[a]This is the way, walk in it,” whenever you turn to the right or to the left.

I) THE CHURCH IS NOT ONLY THE STEWARDS OF THE MESSAGE FOR  ETERNAL LIFE, WE ARE THE STEWARDS OF A BETTER KIND AND QUALITY OF LIFE.

ROMANS 13:8-10
Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for whoever loves others has fulfilled the law. The commandments, “You shall not commit adultery,” “You shall not murder,” “You shall not steal,” “You shall not covet,” and whatever other command there may be, are summed up in this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” 10 Love does no harm to a neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.

GALATIANS 5:16-18
16 So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

GALATIANS 5:19-21
19 The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.

II) THE MESSAGE OF THE CHRISTIANITY IS SUPERIOR TO THE MESSAGE OF
      NATURE.

GALATIANS 5:22-26
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.

LIFE THERE IS NO NEED FOR LAWS.

ROMANS 2:13-14
13 For it is not those who hear the law who are righteous in God’s sight, but it is those who obey the law who will be declared righteous. 14 (Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature things required by the law, they are a law for themselves, even though they do not have the law.

III) THE MESSAGE OF THE CHURCH SHOULD CONTINUE TO SHAPE AND RESHAPE AMERICAN CULTURE.

LEVITICUS 25:10
10 Consecrate the fiftieth year and proclaim liberty throughout the land to all its inhabitants. It shall be a jubilee for you; each of you is to return to your family property and to your own clan.

A) IT IS THE CHURCH THAT TEACHES THAT EVERY PERSON IS MADE IN THE IMAGE OF GOD.

I TIMOTHY 4:7-10
Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives’ tales; rather, train yourself to be godly. For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come. This is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance. 10 That is why we labor and strive, because we have put our hope in the living God, who is the Savior of all people, and especially of those who believe.

B) IF THE CHURCH DISAPPEARED, THEN THE MESSAGE OF THE CHURCH DISAPPEARS.

PHILIPPIANS 1:15-18
15 It is true that some preach Christ out of envy and rivalry, but others out of goodwill. 16 The latter do so out of love, knowing that I am put here for the defense of the gospel. 17 The former preach Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely, supposing that they can stir up trouble for me while I am in chains. 18 But what does it matter? The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached. And because of this I rejoice.

CONCLUSION: THE CHURCH MATTERS AND WE ARE STEWARDS OF THE MESSAGE AND FOR THAT REASON WE BETTER NOT TURN OUR BACKS TO OUR CULTURE AND TO OUR COUNTRY.

HEBREWS 10:24-25
24 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, 25 not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.
